Curriculum Lessons

Orientation to Online Learning (online)  

This lesson introduces you to online learning, with instruction on how to be successful as an Ashworth student. You'll learn proven study skills, find out how to take advantage of different learning styles, and discover time management techniques. The lesson also includes a guide to career opportunities plus supplementary readings.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Real Estate Law and Concurrent Ownership  

How the law of real property involves and regulates almost every aspect of the use and ownership of real property. You will also learn about the different types of concurrent ownership.

Lesson 2: Condominiums, Cooperatives, Times-Shares, Regulations and Encumbrances  

Condominiums, cooperatives, and time-shares by reviewing their similarities and differences as well as what steps are taken to form each. You will also study regulations and encumbrances in relation to real estate and learn about public regulations, aspects of zoning, building codes, different types of private encumbrances, historic and environmental preservation, and eminent domain.

Lesson 3: Nonpossessory Interests and Landlord and Tenant  

The different types of nonpossessory interests attached to land, such as easements, licenses, covenants, and the concept of equitable servitude. You will also learn about the rights and duties of tenants and landlords, as well as assignments and leases.

Lesson 4: Real Estate Contracts  

The components and requirements of contracts for sale, marketable title, and the remedies available for default of a contract of sale. You will also learn about the different types of deeds and how to prepare and record a deed.

Lesson 5: Mortgages and Real Estate Finance  

Key aspects of mortgages including promissory notes, operation of mortgages, rights and remedies should there be a default, and different types of foreclosures. You will also learn about real estate financing, including types of loans, secondary loan markets, and permanent and construction loans.

Lesson 6: Recording Statutes, Title Examinations and the Real Estate Closing  

Recording statutes and title examinations. You will also learn about key aspects of a real estate closing.

Program Description

Students learn the concepts and principles of real estate law required of professional paralegals. Program topics include estates in land, concurrent ownership, landlord-tenant law, lending, deeds and mortgages, closing procedures, and development and investment. Special attention is paid to rights, duties, restrictions, and transfers of real property.

Program Objectives

After completing the Real Estate Law certificate program, students will be able to:

  1. Differentiate real estate law from other types of law and explain how this legal area impacts the daily lives of most Americans.
  2. Identify and explain important concepts in real estate law, including real property, the general laws of land ownership and real estate transactions, title examinations and methods of title transfer, sales contracts and the sales process, real estate financing options, and the closing/settlement process.
  3. Explain the roles and responsibilities of the paralegal, as well as the ethical standards to be demonstrated, while assisting a real estate law attorney.
  4. Identify career opportunities for students with the appropriate training in this specialty area.
