Curriculum Lessons

Orientation to Online Learning (online)  

This lesson introduces you to online learning, with instruction on how to be successful as an Ashworth student. You'll learn proven study skills, find out how to take advantage of different learning styles, and discover time management techniques. The lesson also includes a guide to career opportunities plus supplementary readings.

Lesson 1: Medical Fundamentals and Perspectives on Medical Transcription  

An overview of the transcriptionist's role, a review of selected rules of English grammar and sentence structure, and their importance within the field of medical transcription.

Lesson 2: Style Guide  

A presentation of correct ways to abbreviate, capitalize, punctuate, hyphenate and form the plural and possessive forms of words when transcribing. ou will also be introduced to the number system, spelling and proofreading guidelines, the construction of business letters and the use of reference material for medical transcription.

Lesson 3: Transcribing for Dermatology, Otorhinolaryngology and Ophthalmology  

An introduction to the structure and function of the skin, ears, nose, throat and eyes. Included will be information on the types of questions asked during an examination, related terms and areas to be aware of when transcribing. This is the first lesson in which you will transcribe from dictation.

Lesson 4: Transcribing for Cardiology and Pulmonary Medicine  

How to recognize the types of terms, reports and information needed when transcribing for cardiology and pulmonology.

Lesson 5: Transcribing for Gastroenterology and Endocrinology  

How to recognize the types of terms, reports and information needed when transcribing for gastroenterology and endocrinology.

Lesson 6: Transcribing for Urology and OB-GYN  

How to recognize the types of terms, reports and information needed when transcribing for urology and obstetrics and gynecology.

Lesson 7: Transcribing for Orthopedics and Neurology  

How to recognize the types of terms, reports and information needed when transcribing for orthopedics and neurology.

Lesson 8: Transcribing for Psychiatry, Pathology and Radiology  

Understanding the content of various psychiatry, pathology and radiology reports, as well as recognizing the terms and abbreviations used in each.

Program Description

The Medical Transcription Fundamentals program is designed to introduce students to the healthcare documentation field and to give them hands-on skills transcribing case reports related to a variety of medical specialties. Students will gain fundamental knowledge of the most frequently encountered diseases, diagnoses, and treatments associated with the body's major anatomical systems. The program focuses on standard transcription practices and style guides common in today's medical offices.

Program Objectives

After completing the Medical Transcription Fundamentals certificate program, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the personal and professional skills required for success in medical transcription, outline the duties associated with this work, and describe the employment opportunities available to trained students.
  2. Identify and describe basic examination procedures and positions, laboratory tests, radiography techniques, and pharmacology.
  3. Identify the eight parts of speech and use them correctly when transcribing medical reports.
  4. Identify common problems and errors that occur during dictation or conversion, and explain when specific reference materials should be consulted.
  5. Explain why medical records are confidential, and describe the components of HIPAA and other healthcare regulations that require transcriptionists to maintain patient confidentiality.
  6. Transcribe various types of reports accurately from a variety of medical specialties, and proofread this work for accuracy and compliance with standard rules of grammar and style.
