The lesson also includes a guide to career opportunities plus supplementary readings.
Lesson 2: Medical Terminology
An introduction to the personal and professional characteristics of an effective medical assistant, the various work environments available to a medical assistant, and day-to-day duties and responsibilities involved in both back and front office assisting.
Lesson 3: Medical Insurance Processing and Coding
An introduction to the concepts of word elements and combining and to some basic medical terminology.
Lesson 4: Safety in the Medical Office
An introduction to the major medical insurance programs, procedural and diagnostic coding, and the procedures to fill out and file an insurance claim form.
Lesson 5: Legal and Ethical Issues
An introduction to the guidelines for the personal safety and well-being of staff and patients, and the recommended universal and standard precautions in the health care field.
Lesson 6: Effective Medical Office Communication
The laws, ethics and standards in place that protect patients as well as health care workers. You will learn about the various types of malpractice, what a patient must do to prove that malpractice has occurred, and how, as a health care worker, you can protect your employer and yourself.
Lesson 7: Using Office Equipment and Computers
Effective techniques that will help you communicate professionally with patients, families, and coworkers in the health-care setting.
Lesson 8: Managing Correspondence and Supplies
The selection, use and maintenance of office equipment. Outlines the components of a computer as well as how to select and maintain them.
Lesson 9: Managing the Flow of Medical Records
How to manage your business correspondence efficiently and professionally. You will also learn many of the techniques that medical assistants use to manage supplies.
Lesson 10: Telephone Techniques and Scheduling
The types of medical records and the procedures for maintaining them, and the different payment and collection methods used in a medical office. This Lesson also covers the business and management of the medical front office.
Lesson 11: Patient Reception and Education
The proper techniques to use with the medical office telephone system. You will also learn about another potential task as a medical assistant—setting up and maintaining an efficient schedule.
Lesson 12: Medical Coding and Insurance Claims Processing
Setting the stage for a successful interaction between the patient and the doctor and other medical staff. This Lesson also stresses the importance of encouraging all patients to practice healthy habits and behaviors, and teaching them how to accomplish this goal.
Lesson 13: Medical Billing and Accounting
The types of health care insurance that patients are likely to have, how payers set the charges they pay for providers’ services, and how to submit complete and accurate claims. You will also learn the basics of medical coding, which converts the medical terms used to document diagnoses, treatments and procedures provided to a patient into code numbers selected from standardized coding resources.
The business and financial duties that may be required of an administrative medical assistant, including billing to third-party payers (insurance carriers) and patients, collecting payments, accounting and bookkeeping.
