Lesson Group 2 – Gunsmith ConceptsLesson: Being a Gunsmith
An overview of the skills and knowledge required to perform the duties of a trained gunsmith, including the basic daily tasks required and the terminology specific to the firearms industry. Students will learn about the Federal Firearms License application process and other details related to operating a gun repair business, including workshop layout.
This lesson is an introduction to the types of hand and power tools and other types of equipment necessary to repair and maintain various types of firearms. In addition to common shop tools, students will learn about milling machines, lathes, and soldering and welding equipment. The importance of technical data and techniques for locating gun documentation is also reviewed.
Lesson Group 3 – Understanding and Repairing Revolvers and Pistols

Students will review common malfunctions associated with pistols and revolvers and the appropriate solutions for returning these weapons to proper working order. Lesson coverage includes cleaning and lubrication practices and adjustments related to cartridge misfiring. Students will also learn to identify gun modifications as a potential source of gun malfunction.
In this lesson, instruction is provided on the installation techniques required for common pistol and revolver modifications such as sights, and custom grips. Students are introduced to the processes of polishing and tuning to optimize gun performance for competitive events.
Instruction in this lesson is focused on two common pistols, the Glock, and the Colt 1911. Students learn the details of operation as well as disassembly and popular modifications in addition to advanced gunsmithing practices for the 1911.
Students expand their knowledge of pistol and revolver repair by learning about operation and adjustments made to Smith and Wesson, and Beretta weapons as well as advanced concepts for pistolsmithing Glocks. Lesson coverage includes replacement and modifications to gun barrels.
Lesson Group 4 – Understanding and Repairing Rifles

This lesson introduces students to the theory of operation, evolution and modern mechanics of today's rifles. Students will learn the differences required for gunsmith repair facilities that will work on both handguns and rifles.
Students learn about some of the most requested gunsmith tasks related to rifles, including scope installation, barrel modification and the cleaning of the gun's action. The lesson also reviews the proper techniques required for barrel break in.
Instruction in this lesson teaches students about the procedures and materials used to improve a rifles appearance or accuracy. Specific coverage includes stock work, metal finishing, accuracy testing, recoil reduction and glass bedding.
This lesson expands on student knowledge of rifle modification by accuracy modification techniques for three specific rifle makes, including a Ruger, and Remington, and the popular AR-15. Students will also learn how scout rifles are constructed and how to refresh worn or heavily used hunting rifles.
Lesson Group 5 – Shotguns

Students will learn about specialized tools and procedures required to repair modern shotguns. This lesson provides disassembly and reassembly procedures for several common makes and models of shotguns to serve as a foundation for the development of overall shotgun repair expertise.
In this lesson students will learn repair techniques specific to multiple American and foreign gun makers and various styles including over/under, single shot, and semi-automatic. Coverage includes Marlin, Mossberg, CZ and other popular makes of shotguns.
This lesson expands on program coverage of popular shotgun makes and models with instruction on the operation, disassembly and reassembly of Remington, Savage, Smith and Wesson and Parker Double shotguns. Student will learn about some older shotguns from these makers that often passed down through many generations of a family.
The instructional coverage of this program concludes with coverage of some of the less common design styles for both older and modern shotguns. Students learn about the Street Sweeper as well as the Winchester Super 2 and Super 3. Lesson coverage also includes a summary of the design evolution of shotguns from the 1800's to present day.
The Gunsmithing program provides students with a basic understanding of the materials, tools and processes used by firearms repair professionals to maintain, restore, modify and upgrade common pistols, rifles and shotguns. Students learn safe-work practices, hand and power tool identification and operation, and to identify various brands and styles of commercially available firearms. The program provides instruction on the serviceable components of modern firearms as well as the equipment, tools, and practices used to customize and upgrade guns to customer specification. This program also provides instruction on basic shop setup and business practices.
