Ashworth graduate Nicole Marous

A love and appreciation for animals runs thick in Nicole Marous’ family. Working at the Nevada SPCA and volunteering at the Lion Habitat Ranch in Henderson, Nevada, Nicole wanted to work more closely with animals. That’s when she decided to further her education.

From passion to career

Wanting to work more closely with animals, Nicole found Ashworth College. Our online Veterinary Assisting Career Diploma program stuck out to her. “Ashworth was appealing to me because the program was affordable and I could complete the coursework from the comfort of home,” she said.

Nicole worked through the program, noting she tended to study and work best in the early morning when her energy and focus was highest. She added that when she came across coursework that was difficult or complex, she found that reading aloud helped, as well as flashcards.

Nicole believes pursuing an online education during the pandemic was beneficial.

“I am grateful that I had the opportunity to study and complete the program online during the current state of affairs with COVID-19,” she said. “I was able to continue on and persevere with little to no interruption in my studies because it was online, and not brick-and-mortar.”

Nicole was able to use what she was learning in her coursework in a real-world setting. She completed her externship at VCA Nellis in Las Vegas.

“I had such a positive experience there that I quickly applied for a job with the same company, different location, and got hired!” she said.

Nicole currently works as a veterinary assistant at VCA Decatur, Las Vegas, Nevada, where she says she was hired one week after graduating, noting that her externship directly led to her employment.

Nicole believes her education with Ashworth College allowed her to launch her career.

“My education with Ashworth helped me take the next step with my career by granting me my diploma in veterinary assisting,” she said. “Without it, I would not even be a candidate for the position, but now i am confident that I will thrive at VCA and I hope to have a long future there.”

Graduating with honors, Nicole plans to continue working in the field and eventually pursue her veterinary technician degree from Ashworth, and then get licensed in the state of Nevada.

“Ashworth's vet assisting program has allowed me to continue my passion at a higher level,” she said.
