How your dream career is like the tv show

How Taking Property Management Courses Online Mimics Extreme Makeover - Home Edition

For the past ten years, the popular TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has come into homes across America with inspiring stories that bring together appreciative families their local community and the nuts and bolts of home repair. The result is always a dwelling that makes the residents feel truly at home. While the programming is pitched as a home renovation show, it is really about much more than that. It’s not just a hard hat host Ty Pennington wears on the show – it’s a combination of a lot of hats. Besides acting as real estate agent, interior designer and personal counselor, he is also a fantastic property manager.

There are many similarities between the tasks depicted on the well-known show and the responsibilities held by those working in property management careers.

  • Meet new people: At the heart of every Extreme Makeover episode is meeting the deserving family. Similarly, property managers have the privilege of meeting a variety of people with interesting backgrounds and stories. As a property manager, you'll enjoy encounters with people you wouldn't ordinarily get to interact with. Meeting and talking with them can be an eye-opening experience that also hones one of the most valuable skills that property managers must have to succeed. Being able to connect and find common ground with anyone is a skill that will benefit you in many other facets of your life, too.
  • Manage exciting projects: After completing your property management courses online, you'll understand the importance of maintaining a clean and safe home environment for the wellbeing of your tenants. Managing interior design, landscaping and various repair projects allows you to make important decisions on a variety of home renovation ventures. Not only do you get to tackle fun tasks, you also may see – and hear – some outrageous stories. A party that led to a hole in the wall? A young child shoved socks down the toilet breaking the pipes? In the world of property management, you never know what will happen one day to the next.
  • Ensure profitability: Popular television shows are known to make a lot of money, but did you know property management careers responsible for managing the finances of whole apartment complexes, developments and community associations? It's serious business, which is why property managers command respect. And the need trained property managers is great. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a 6% increase in property, real estate and community association manager positions by 2020. This translates to 322,200 job opportunities in this field in a few short years!

Having boundless opportunities to meet new people, start new projects, improve people’s lives and generate more income – for the properties you manage and for yourself as a trained professional –are all exciting possibilities when entering the job market after completing your property management courses. Your daily life may not have cameras and millions of viewers, but you can feel like a star when working in your dream career.
