Reasons Why an Overly Tight Schedule Can Ruin Your College Experience

Most of us remember something of our school days—the friends we made, the times we shared with others, the teachers who really made a difference. What most of us probably don’t regret leaving behind, however, is the rigid schedules we had to follow, both in terms of class hours as well as assignment due dates.

This difficult schedule can ruin the experience of learning, and it’s no less true in college than it is in elementary or secondary school. The reasons for this come down to the following:

  • Stress: You probably remember the stress you felt when trying to complete an assignment on time. That stress not only makes the experience unpleasant, but it can be harmful for your health. Constantly rushing to meet a deadline can make your college experience detrimental to your long-term well being. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 80 percent of college students say they frequently or sometimes experience daily stress.
  • Makes learning unpleasant: Unpleasant stress can actually diminish the effectiveness of your education. If your brain associates information with unpleasant emotions, it’s more likely to dump it afterward rather than hold on to it. Thus, to be most effective, learning should be a pleasant experience, not something wholly characterized by stress.
  • Unfocused on learning: Not only is too much focus on deadlines stressful, it’s also not really centered around the process of learning. Instead, you focus on meeting deadlines and keeping grades up, meaning your grades actually do more to measure your ability to submit assignments on time rather than truly learn from them.

To truly benefit you, your college education should be one in which you experience your journey of self-development, not something to get out of the way and tick off your to-do list. The rigid schedules that most colleges use get in the way of this, however.

Fortunately, there are educational opportunities that allow you to earn a degree and truly experience your learning without the tight schedules. Ashworth College, for example, offers these opportunities online. You’re able to work at your own pace and set your own deadlines, which is especially helpful when your life is already a circus act.
