Medical Billing Training Prepares You For A Recession-Proof Career

The economy and its adverse effects on businesses and employment are on the minds of people all across America. While it may seem like everything from banks to real estate to the corner coffee shop are taking a hit, in truth there are some businesses that continue to thrive and even prosper no matter how the economy stories trending. The medical field, for example, is an integral part of our everyday lives and thrives regardless of what happens on Wall Street.

As a result, smart, career-focused individuals are getting medical career education such as medical billing training like never before. And for good reason: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a 20% increase in careers for medical records and health information technicians is expected by 2020. An estimated 217,300 job opportunities will be available for those with the right education. But why is medical billing seemingly recession-proof?

  • Aging baby boomers: As baby boomers get older and begin to have the common health problems associated with age, they find themselves in need of more medical care. The increased frequency in doctors' appointments and specialists' visits amount to an abundance in available work for those with medical billing training. Each treatment, test and procedure requires the medical biller to facilitate the proper exchange of information between insurance companies, healthcare providers and the patients themselves.
  • Electronic recordkeeping: It's the digital age, so hard-copy medical charts are being moved to the computer. Long gone are the days of file cabinets stuffed with folders and loose papers hanging about. Instead, healthcare professionals are now converting all paper files to an electronic format. In addition to transferring older files into online databases, certified, professional medical billers will also need to be able to continue to gather information on new patients as well.
  • An advancing field: While the method of collecting reporting and storing medical records is changing, the entire healthcare field is evolving, too. Health care reform will result in healthcare coverage for millions of new people, bringing medical billing careers to the forefront of technological and social change. It is up to those with medical billing training to adapt to these changes and transition into the future.

The medical billing field is expected to endure and thrive no matter what the economy may have in store. Those who choose to enter this field are looking at entering a job market where every day holds new and exciting challenges and a plethora of career opportunities for the foreseeable future. This kind of job security can help you enter the medical billing field confidently and expectantly as you work toward the kind of future you know you deserve.
