How to Balance Treating Yourself While Still Getting Things Done

Some say the secret to a happy life is finding balance, but many women know it’s not that simple. It’s one thing to have an idea of what that perfect balance is, but between work, school, family and other life-related responsibilities that idea sometimes seems impossible. With bills, deadlines, appointments and more, taking the time to focus on you is often last on the list. But treating yourself is an important part of life’s balance. By setting achievable goals and rewarding yourself appropriately, you can have those "treat yourself" moments while still taking care of everything on your list.

Make a Plan

It's easy to find yourself off balance when responsibilities start to pile up, or conversely, when you spend too much time focused on having fun. Taking the time to write down everything that's on your plate can help you find time to get everything done. Once you have a list of your responsibilities, write down your goals, and the ways you want to treat yourself! This is different for every woman, but some fun things can be getting a mani-pedi, spending an afternoon at the park with your dog, buying that pair of shoes you've been eyeing, or even staying in with a good book. However you treat yourself, these moments are a critical part of life. By writing down your goals, you can start to reward yourself for checking things off of your to-do list.

Start Small

Now that you have a list of all of your many responsibilities, as well as a list of nice things to leverage as a reward, try to tackle one or two things a day. Even mundane tasks like loading the dishwasher or making lunch for your kids deserve to be rewarded with something solely for you. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed by a long list, start small by taking care of the things you can easily accomplish. Rewarding yourself with little things like a nice cup of coffee or a few minutes with your favorite magazine between errands or meetings allows your brain to refocus and your body to rest, before you go back to being Superwoman! Of course, when you do tackle some of those bigger projects, it's okay to reward yourself proportionately!

Be Positive!

It's easy to get overwhelmed by life's responsibilities, especially if you're trying to juggle work, school and a family. Even women who are focused on building their careers often forget to take time for themselves. Try to keep a positive attitude and approach problems as opportunities – not as roadblocks. Treating yourself as a reward for accomplishing daily tasks is a great way to incorporate this positive energy back into your life. Whether you have an hour for yoga or spin class, or 15 minutes to call a friend and say hi, finding reasons to smile and be proud of everything you do can have an enormous impact on your overall well-being. As difficult as it may seem at first, finding that balance between taking care of everything on your plate and taking care of yourself is critical to having a healthy, happy life! Think about what makes you happy, from the minutia (playing with your kids) to the major (an afternoon on a sandy beach) and reward yourself appropriately. When you do, you'll start to see anything is possible!
