When you think about healthcare careers, you probably picture helping professions like doctors, nurses, therapists, and paraprofessionals who work directly with patients. But behind all those clinicians is a business organization that requires skilled administrators to make the whole operation run smoothly and profitably. From the reception desk to the executive suite, there are numerous occupations on the administrative side of healthcare.
If you’re looking for a lucrative career in healthcare that doesn’t require years of doctoral-level study, there are important and high-paying positions for professionals with only master’s degrees. Ashworth College offers two Master of Healthcare Administration degrees:
Both degrees can open doors to executive-level positions across a wide range of healthcare industries, including insurance, pharmaceutical, management associations, public policy, and many others. These three positions are just a sample of what you can do with an MHA.
Chief Operating Officer, Healthcare System
This is not an entry-level position for sure, but an MHA can launch your climb up the corporate ladder all the way to this c-suite level position of Chief Operating Officer. As COO, you’ll tap your education and experience to manage and direct all activities related to a healthcare organization’s operations, growth, and development. Completing coursework like Healthcare Economics and Financial Management (MH688) will provide the foundation you need to effectively plan strategies to maintain your company’s viability over the long term.
Chief Operating Officer salaries across all industries range from $300,000 to $600,000 per year. That’s not a bad return on your investment at Ashworth College.
Market Research Director, Pharmaceutical Company
If data’s your thing, you might enjoy a career in market research for a pharmaceutical company. You’ll apply your studies from courses like Information Management (MH683) and Strategic Management (MB601) to a marketing analysis of existing pharmaceutical products to those in development. Market research directors often set policies for research methodology and data collection while interacting with other corporate teams including sales, regulatory compliance, and research and development. A market research director for a pharmaceutical company can earn upwards of $250,000 per year.
Director of Healthcare Quality, Hospital Association
Hospital associations and other advisory groups often help member organizations with ongoing quality improvement. These associations employ healthcare quality directors to translate research into evidence-based practice standards for their members. In this role, you might set policies related to nursing care, surgical outcomes, and patient experience to achieve data-driven benchmarks. While some healthcare quality positions require a clinical degree like nursing, others are open to those with MHA degrees which include coursework on topics like Project Management (MB670) or Managed Health Care (MH684). Salaries for a director of healthcare quality can range from $100,000 to $150,000.
