  • Employment is projected to grow 11% between 2006 and 2016. However, the job outlook depends primarily on the amount of government funding that is allocated to corrections, and especially to probation systems.
  • Mandatory sentencing guidelines calling for longer sentences and reduced parole for inmates have resulted in a large increase in the prison population.
  • Emphasis on rehabilitation and alternate forms of punishment spurs demand for probation and parole officers and correctional treatment specialists.

Advancement Opportunities

  • Many organizations have several levels of specialists and as well as supervisors.
  • Advancement is primarily based on length of experience and performance. Further education may be helpful for advancement.
  • Many go on to find work as police officers, correctional officers, paralegals, private investigators, crime scene investigators, forensic psychologists, and lawyers.
