Megan BowenMegan Bowen

Megan Bowen teaches high school and college prep English courses including Survey of Literature, World Literature, American Literature, British Literature and Journalism. After graduating from Miami University in 1996 with a double major in English Literature and Secondary English Education, Megan taught in Ohio's public school system before moving to Atlanta to teach in a private school.

Megan says that she was born to be a teacher. "I was a kid who came home from third grade and pretended to teach school. I've always been a reader and a writer. For me it's love of content and I wanted to pass that on to my students. I never really thought I would not be a teacher."

Megan believes strongly in the concept of distance education. "There isn't just one set way to learn," she says. "I think online education offers a great opportunity for students who for whatever reason can't or don't choose to be in a traditional classroom setting. And yet it still allows them to have interaction with a teacher. It's still an entire educational experience."

In some ways, teaching at Ashworth has been an education for Megan. "One thing I've learned from teaching online is how varied the students' life experiences are. I have one student who was a motor cross racer and travelled throughout the country. The online program was perfect for her because it was something she could do in her hotel room in the evening. I also have a lot of students whose parents live abroad, so we often have to coordinate our time zones in order to communicate live."

When it comes to student interaction, distance isn't an issue for Megan. "I get a lot of emails from students. I really feel that I get to know them even though I rarely have face-to-face interaction with them. And I do get a lot of thank you emails from students who struggled with English courses and say that it was really a fun learning experience."

Megan takes a great deal of pride in being a teacher because she believes so strongly in the value of learning. "I believe that it's important to teach. Teaching is more than just content. It's a love of learning, especially with writing because the life skills that I know will help my students every day."
