Private Investigation Orientation  

In this course, you’ll examine the goals and values of Ashworth College, time management, creating a realistic weekly and monthly study schedule, the nature and purpose of assessments, how to study effectively to prepare for and take an online examination, and developing the skill sets necessary for success in the twenty-first century. You’ll also review the fundamental concepts and processes concerning federal and state laws and court systems, as well as careers in the legal and criminal justice fields.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Identify skills needed to be a confident and independent online learner.
  • Explain fundamental concepts and processes concerning federal and state laws and court systems.

Lesson Group 1: Introduction to Private Investigation  

This course begins with a description of the investigative process and the skills and characteristics that successful private investigators possess. Then, you’ll review the common types of investigations and services that occur in the private sector before reviewing the history and evolution of the investigations industry. Finally, you’ll study the steps of how to process a crime scene as a private investigator.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Identify the skills required of private investigators and the services they provide.
  • Summarize the investigation process regarding different types of crimes.
  • Explain how the investigations industry has evolved throughout history.
  • Describe how to investigate and process a crime scene.

Lesson Group 2: Techniques for Obtaining Information 

In this course, you’ll learn how to conduct interviews and find sources in order to collect information about your investigation. You’ll also learn how to conduct different types of surveillance and undercover investigations, as well as how to document and manage your cases.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Identify interviewing techniques used in the investigation process.
  • Differentiate between types of information sources.
  • Explain how to conduct different types of surveillance.
  • Recognize the importance of using a case management system.

Lesson Group 3: The Law, Forensics, and Retail and Domestic Investigations  

This course opens with a review of the US legal system and the laws concerning evidence that may be used in court. Then, you’ll learn how forensic evidence is discovered, evaluated, and used in the judicial process. Finally, you’ll explore the aspects and procedures of retail security, loss prevention, and domestic and child custody investigations.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Differentiate between criminal and civil law and their legal processes.
  • Explain how forensic evidence is used in the judicial process.
  • Summarize how to conduct investigations concerning retail security and loss prevention.
  • Identify the issues and procedures associated with domestic and child custody investigations.

Lesson Group 4: Investigative Specialties and Firearm Usage 

In this course, you’ll learn how to conduct a variety of investigations, such as those concerning insurance fraud, arson, medical malpractice, and missing persons. You’ll also review aspects of executive protection, as well as how to use a firearm safely.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Describe how to conduct a workers’ compensation or liability claim investigation.
  • Define the responsibilities associated with executive protection.
  • Identify safe practices and legal considerations concerning the use of firearms.
  • Summarize how to conduct specialized investigations.

Program Description

The Private Investigation certificate program is designed to provide you with the knowledge of the skills required of private investigators.
