Through our online HVAC course curriculum, you will gain essential knowledge needed to install, troubleshoot, and maintain HVAC systems for residential and commercial buildings. Upon successful completion of your coursework, you will be ready to sit for the required EPA Section 608 Certification exam.

Heating and Air Conditioning Orientation  

In this course, you’ll examine the goals and values of Ashworth College, time management, creating a realistic weekly and monthly study schedule, the nature and purpose of assessments, how to study effectively to prepare for and take an online examination, and developing the skill sets necessary for success in the twenty-first century.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Familiarize yourself with the goals and structure of Ashworth College’s Heating and Air Conditioning course.
  • Coordinate your learning style with time management skills and assessment preparation. 
  • Establish a set of skills for occupational success.

Lesson Group 1: Fundamentals of HVAC/R 

This course provides foundational knowledge for working in the heating and air conditioning field by studying the occupational environment while learning about tools, instruments, and equipment. You’ll then explore the properties of various refrigeration systems along with the proper techniques and procedures for managing these systems.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Develop a basic knowledge of work practices with an understanding of matter, hear transfer, and pressure.
  • Explore the use of common tools and electrical instruments with servicing equipment.
  • Understand the standard components of refrigeration systems and the basic elements of refrigeration cycles.
  • Follow correct handling practices for various refrigerants.

Lesson Group 2: HVAC/R Systems 

This course provides an overview of safe work practices with electrical systems. You’ll explore the process for installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance with residential air-conditioning, heating, and heat-pump systems.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Analyze electrical control and communication systems by identifying common components and interpreting diagrams and schematics. 
  • Coordinate residential air-conditioning theory principles with installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance practices.
  • Coordinate residential heating system design principles with installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance practices.
  • Coordinate electrical heating systems and heat-pump designs with installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance practices.

Lesson Group 3: HVAC/R System Design, Layout, and Commercial Applications  

This course details the elements of design, sizing, and layout with HVAC/R systems, focusing on commercial air-conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems. Here, you’ll apply HVAC concepts to commercial systems with proper installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting practices. 

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Develop a foundational knowledge of basic construction elements with design and systemic configurations.
  • Apply HVAC/R principles to various commercial air-conditioning, heating, and refrigeration components and systems.
  • Master the accepted practices for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting commercial HVAC/R systems.
