Distance Ed leader supports Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) event
Ashworth College Gets Ready to "Walk Like MADD" in Annual Atlanta Fundraiser
NORCROSS, Georgia – September 28, 2009 – Ashworth College continues its community service endeavors by supporting the Atlanta chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s (MADD) annual Walk Like MADD 5K walk, Saturday, October 3, 2009. The walk kicks off at Zoo Atlanta at 8:30 a.m.
During the month of September, Ashworth College, a leader in online distance education, has collected pledges to support Team Ashworth. Ashworth’s relationship with MADD began in 2005, after loosing a valued staff member who was killed by a drunk driver.
“We’re looking forward to participating in this year’s walk. Having lost a co-worker and friend to drunk driving really brings this issue home,” said Jeannie Brady, Ashworth Director of Human Resources. “It’s an honor do this in her memory.”
The impact of drunk driving has particular relevance to one Ashworth student who, after losing both a sister and a daughter in separate incidents, incorporated her experiences in an essay which was entered in the 2009 Project Working Mom… and Dads Too! scholarship competition.
Robin Bucholz, a student from Black River Falls, WI, was one of five scholarship recipients announced on the The Tyra Banks Show this past April. Bucholz since has enrolled at Ashworth to learn web design so that she can begin creating memorial websites for families that lose loved ones to drunken drivers or other tragedies.
“The site I created for my sister was an important part of the healing process,” she said. “This is an opportunity for me to turn something that is important to me into a career and be able to help others at the same time.” Bucholz has also been a contributor to the MADD group on the Ashworth Student Forum.
Throughout the year, Ashworth College prides itself in its community outreach endeavors and regularly supports several organizations to include the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, and March of Dimes.
