Scholarship recipient announced on The Tyra Banks Show
Ashworth College awards scholarship to deserving working mom
NORCROSS, Georgia - May 13, 2009 - Robin Bucholz started her day like so many days before. Going to work, taking care of her family, worrying about paying the bills. That is, until she received a life-changing telephone call.
The caller was from The Tyra Banks Show, congratulating Bucholz on becoming a finalist in the 2009 Project Working Mom ... and Dads Too! scholarship essay competition and inviting her to appear on the show with the other finalists.
There was one minor catch -- Bucholz needed to travel from her home in Black River Falls, WI to New York City the next day.
"It was a whirlwind," said Bucholz. "First, to think I might realize my dream of going back to school. Then to drop everything, fly to New York and be awarded a scholarship on a national TV show – all in less than 48 hours. It was very thrilling."
Sponsored by eLearners and five online colleges and universities, working moms and dads were invited to submit essays online explaining how continuing their education would make a difference in their life. A top finalist from each school was represented on an episode of The Tyra Banks Show which aired in late April. Ashworth College selected Bucholz to receive a full ride scholarship for Ashworth's accredited Web Design program.
Bucholz's older sister and daughter were both victims of drunk drivers. This experience fueled her desire to return to school and turn personal tragedy into a positive experience -- not only for herself and her family, but for other families with similar losses. By learning web design at Ashworth College, her goal is to create memorial websites for families that lose loved ones to drunken drivers or other tragedies. "The site I created for my sister was an important part of the healing process," said Bucholz. "This is an opportunity for me to turn something that is important to me into a career and be able to help others at the same time."
From more than 14,000 applicants, Bucholz's essay made a significant impression on Ashworth's review committee. "Robin embodies that entrepreneurial spirit that we find in a lot of our students," said F. Milton Miller, Ed.D., Ashworth Vice President, Education. "Through online learning, many Ashworth students are able to successfully balance work and family while furthering their education. We're excited to have her studying with us."
"Partnering with Project Working Mom…and Dads Too! has been a tremendous opportunity for Ashworth College to help make a difference," Miller added. "Through education, we can help deserving, hard-working parents improve their lives."
